Is Green Building Just a Fad?

In a recent survey, we asked companies in the commercial construction and design industry what they thought about green building.  The exact survey Q/A was as follows:

Does your company believe that the green building movement is here to stay?

Yes 80%
No  20%

We agree that green building is here to stay.  And to the 20% that don’t agree…FYI: just go into Google and search for “green building”.  It returns 120 million results.  That’s huge validation and momentum for green building.

We hope these survey results help you to position your company to take advantage of this undeniable building trend.  Good luck out there, Fella.

Commercials for Construction Companies + Design Firms are Not Common, YET

Video is very effective, but only when it reaches the intended target audience. And although television is expensive, it is an effective way to reach consumers.  So how do businesses that sell to other businesses (B2B) use video to promote their products and services?  Answer:  the internet.

In a recent survey, we learned that well over half of the companies in the commercial construction and design industry would not create a video for their B2B product/service.  The exact question and answers was as follows:

Would your company create a television-quality commercial if there was a way to reach your exact target market with it?

No   65%
Yes  35%

The reason 65% of companies said “No” is likely because they are not aware of how inexpensive and easy it can be to create an effective commercial for their company, and get it LIVE on the web.  They’re probably also not sure where on the web to post it.  No matter what the exact reason for having not created a company commercial and uploading it to the web, we believe B2B company commercials will quickly become much more common, and we see this as an opportunity for early adopters to gain a competitive advantage.

FYI:  there are company commercials in jobsite123.com that are already getting hundreds of views per month…(we’ve only barely bugun to promote this feature)

Membership in Trade Organizations is Beneficial – if you Participate

The value of belonging to a trade organization is obvious to the majority of companies in the commercial construction and design industry.  At least two reasons are: 1) networking opportunities and 2) the credibility that comes with memebership in a prominent Org.

How many business/trade organizations does your company belong to?
7%    None.
10%  1 Org.
17%  2 Orgs.
22%  3 Orgs.
45%  More than 3 Orgs.

How many business networking events does someone from your company attend each month?
20%   0 Networking Events
35%   1 Networking Event
20%   2 Networking Events

13%   3 Networking Events
12%   More than 3 Networking Events

It’s interesting that 93% of companies in the industry belong to at least 1 Industry Org, but a full 20% don’t participate in it.  Just belonging is not enough…you have to participate in order to get a good return on the expense of your membership dues.

Not nurturing your existing business relationships?

In a recent survey, we learned that an alarming percentage of companies are not following up with their existing relationships.  The question and answers were as follows:

Which of the following is the most effective way your company nurtures its existing business relationships?

48% Breakfast/Lunch Meetings
8%   Golf Outings
7%   Sporting Event Tickets
3%   Fishing Trips

33% Other

The 33% that answered “Other” mostly commented that they “just provide excellent service” or ”don’t do anything”.  Please keep in mind in this fiercly competitive economy:  if you don’t follow-up with your relationships, your competitors will.

Are you getting a good Return from the dollars invested in your Company Website?

Our national database of commercial construction and design companies includes architects, engineers, general contractors, specialty contractors, material suppliers, related vendors and corporate services. In a recent survey, we learned how much companies are spending on their website.  The questions and responses were as follows:

How much did your company website originally cost to create?

41%    Less than $1,000
38%    $1,000 – $4,999
14%    $5,000 – $14,999
8%      More than $15,000

How much does your company spend per month to maintain its website?

62%    Less than $100
22%    $100 – $499
8%      $500 – $1,500
5%      More than $1,500

The money that companies are spending on their website is suprising, especially because of the small amount of traffic and business leads the majority of them get.

jobsite123.com provides companies with a free web presence within its community of company profiles.  When all of the profile templates are completely filled-in, they create a web presence that is more effective than 99% of company websites.

How Often Do You Update The Information in Your Company Website?

chief content officer craig noble

In one of our recent surveys of commercial construction and design companies, we asked the above question. The distribution of answers is as follows:

14% “We never update our website content.”

57% “We update our website content less than once a month.”

19% “We update our website content monthly.”

11% “We update our website content more than once a month.”

With almost 3/4 of the industry allowing their website to broadcast less-than-current company information, the opportunity here seems glaringly obvious – especially when you consider the corresponding survey responses we got about the number of visitors that most company websites get. The basic premise seems to be this: the more current your company information is on the web, the more likely it is to attract online visitors.

How Many Unique Visitors Does Your Company Website Attract Each Month?

We recently surveyed our current database of nearly 3,000 companies that work in and around the commercial construction and design industry. I thought the answers to this question about the number of monthly visitors that a typical company website gets were worth posting. The responses were as follows:

38%  “Not Sure.”

35%  “Less Than 100 unique visitors per month.”

8%    “Between 100-199 unique visitors per month.”

11%  “Between 200-499 unique visitors per month.”

8%    “More than 500 unique visitors per month.”

The companies that responded ”not sure” likely equates to ”not many”; which means, if our sample size is indicative of the entire industry, almost 3/4 of the companies in the U.S. commercial construction and design industry are getting less than 100 visitors per month to their websites.  This is just more evidence that the companies that focus some marketing energy on the web are going to create a competitive advantage for themselves.

By the way, the most highly traffic’d company profiles on jobsite123.com are currently getting around 2,000 visits per month.

HOW MANY BUSINESS LEADS DOES YOUR COMPANY WEBSITE GENERATE EACH MONTH?

chief content officer craig noble
Craig Noble

Last week, we surveyed our current database of nearly 3,000 companies that work in and around the commercial construction and design industry.  I thought the answers to this question about the number of leads generated from a typical company website were worth posting. The responses were as follows:

43%  “Not Sure.”

14%  “Zero.”

24%  “Between 1-4 leads per month.”

3%    ”Between 5-9 leads per month.”

16%  ”More than 10 leads per month.”

I think it’s safe to say that the 43% that are “not sure” of the number of leads generated by their website are probably not following up with them.  So, in other words, 57% of the industry has a web presence that is not effectively making them any money.  If you think about the huge up-trend in use of the internet to find anything and everything, this represents a real opportunity for companies that position themselves on the web to be seen by the growing number of buyers looking online for resources.

I hope this helps in your business development planning.  If we can be of further assistance, feel free to contact us at solutions@jobsite123.com.
